Hokkaido Shinkansen to Run Faster Through the Seikan Tunnel Over New Year

Travelers planning a New Year journey between Tokyo and Hokkaido have a small but useful update to factor in: JR Hokkaido will run selected Hokkaido Shinkansen trains through the Seikan Tunnel at up to 260 km/h during a six-day period from December 30, 2026, to January 4, 2027. The operator announced the plan on October 22.

The speed increase applies inside the roughly 54-kilometer tunnel, where trains normally travel at up to 160 km/h. The faster running is possible during designated time windows because passenger Shinkansen and freight trains share the corridor; their operating periods are separated so the bullet trains can travel faster. This is a seasonal operating arrangement, not a permanent speed change.

When the faster running applies

On December 30, the faster operation is scheduled from the first train until around noon. From December 31 through January 4, it is planned from the first train until about 3:30 p.m. Only trains that pass through the tunnel during those windows are included, so the change does not apply to every departure or to the whole day.

JR Hokkaido says the quickest Tokyo–Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto journey will take 3 hours 51 minutes, compared with the operator’s usual fastest time of 3 hours 57 minutes. That is a modest saving: useful when coordinating a connection, but not a reason to assume that any particular train will arrive six minutes earlier. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s announcement describes the saving as five minutes, while JR Hokkaido’s detailed release says six; use the dated timetable for your actual train rather than relying on a general headline figure.

Check connections as well as the Shinkansen

The timetable changes matter beyond the tunnel. JR Hokkaido says departure times will move for certain services stopping at Kikonai, including Hayate 93, Hayabusa 1 and Hayabusa 17. Hayate 91 is an exception: its departure from Shin-Aomori is shifted later while its Kikonai arrival and departure times stay the same. Some Hakodate Liner services connecting Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto with Hakodate will also have adjusted times.

That makes this especially relevant if your plan includes a transfer in Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to reach Hakodate. A connection that looks familiar from an ordinary timetable may not line up in the same way on the affected dates. Check the schedule for your exact travel day, allow time for the transfer, and confirm the latest operator information before setting onward plans. JR Hokkaido has published separate timetable details for December 30 and for December 31 through January 4.

If you may need train tickets for a multi-leg winter trip, you can book through Rail Monsters; check that your intended travel date and services are available before finalizing your plans.

For travelers, the practical takeaway is simple: the announcement offers a slightly quicker ride on eligible daytime trains, but the dated schedule is the more important planning detail. Check both the Shinkansen and any onward connection, particularly if you are traveling to or from Hakodate during the New Year period.
